A Perfect Beach Walk – Ohoidertutu to Madwaer
In August 2016, I stayed with a family in Ohoidertutu and decided to walk to Madwaer which is about a 2.3 kilometer beach walk. This is probably the best beach in the Kei islands and has absolutely no tourist infrastructure. Some local children joined me on the walk and it was a great experience. There is nothing between the 2 villages so bring drinks from the store in Ohoidertutu. Starting from Ohoidertutu:

After few minutes you will pass a picnic spot–there are quite a few of these, some in better condition that others:

There isn’t much boat traffic here, just local fishermen and canoes. The sea is gorgeous:

In between Madwaer and Ohoidertutu the beach feels very remote and undiscovered. My ‘guides’ were very happy to pose for photos:

When the tide is out the beach is incredibly wide and as always has beautiful white sand:

About 2/3 of the way from Ohoidertutu to Madwaer there is an abandoned village about 50 meters from the beach. It is interesting to walk around and you can get some nice photos too:

Arriving in Madwaer, there is a store at the top of the hill. Cold drinks, ‘es kiko’, and snacks are available along with a pretty good view:

Practicalities:
This beach walk will take about 2 hours return, allowing for stops and photos. Make sure to bring drinks and sunscreen. There is also an inland trail that follows the beach about 2/3 of the way from Ohoidertutu, which is useful for getting out of the sun or travelling by motorbike.
