About

My name is Chris and I’m from Canada. I’ve traveled to the Kei islands every year since 2013, staying between 2 weeks and a month each time. Yes, it is possible to spend a month on the Kei islands!

The first time I came to Kei in August 2013, it was very much by accident. I was in Sulawesi trying to go to Banda, but I couldn’t find any flight information online so I decided to fly to Ambon and figure out things from there. When I arrived at the Ambon airport it became clear that there were no flights to Banda and there weren’t going to be any in the immediate future. I already knew that the Pelni ferries didn’t fit my schedule and the idea of going to Ambon city from the airport didn’t seem very appealing either. It was early afternoon already and I decided to fly somewhere else. Of the limited same day options from Ambon, the Kei islands seemed the most interesting and that’s where I ended up.

I thought that not many tourists came to Kei so I asked the flight attendant, “Do many tourists go to Kei?”. She said, “Yes, a lot” and there was a pause during which I was a little disappointed. Then she continued, “sometimes 3 or 4 even!”.
